This is an expanded and updated version of Appendix A found on pp. 343-364 of “Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce” by Noal Cohen and Michael Fitzgerald, Berkeley Hills Books, Berkeley, CA, 2002. It will be further updated regularly as new recordings of Gryce’s compositions appear. (Latest Update – September 16, 2022)
The following index presents all of Gryce’s recorded compositions, along with representative recordings on which the composition can be found. The year(s) of U. S. copyright registration is (are) given if known. Form, recorded key, and harmonic relationships to “standard” compositions are indicated where appropriate. It is an imposing task to comprehensively identify songs present on recordings issued worldwide, over a 70-year period. Therefore, some examples may have been omitted and we apologize to any artists, or their heirs, whose versions of Gryce compositions have been overlooked. All issues of a given recording are not presented, but an effort has been made to list, primarily, CD reissues (availability of any items listed is not guaranteed). When no CD reissue exists, the original or a representative LP issue is given. Recording dates are given as year/month/day with 00 indicating that the month or day is unknown. If no recording date information could be found, the release year is given. Recording dates in italics can be found in the Discography. Copyright information is provided for compositions or folios not found in Appendix B.

Unrecorded Compositions of Gigi Gryce
Unless otherwise noted, the following titles were never recorded, and could very well represent just a fraction of the Gryce compositions that have never seen the light of day. During the course of being interviewed on the subject of Gryce, several subjects recalled seeing a large body of works stored in Gryce’s home. Unfortunately, that treasure-trove of material, if it remained intact, could never be located and it is very possible that many of his manuscripts were either destroyed or given to parties unknown. This compilation was drawn from Library of Congress, BMI, and ASCAP records. It was possible to examine some, but not all, of Gryce’s copyright depositions, and the approximate year of registration is given, followed by occasional comments on form and structure. It is interesting to note that several of these pieces were apparently composed during his later years, after Gryce had left the music business.
